Speed TV’s video series Victory By Design is quite possibly the best we can get toward hearing historic race cars in their natural state. The DVD series typically features one brand (Aston Martin, Ferrari, Alpha Romeo, Porsche, Jaguar, and Maserati were the original 6 productions) with former F1 driver Alain de Cadenet walking around a car explaining its historical significance, followed by him climbing in and driving the car somewhat-hastily. What I really like about this series, though, is that there’s no music at all, the only sound coming more or less unedited straight off the microphones without anything covering up the sound of the cars.
Sadly, the Victory By Design website has since been taken down, but the DVD’s are still for sale on Amazon and the likes. They make great Christmas presents for any car audio fan you may know, and it’s not too late to order.
