This is a bit old I’m sure, but I just found the photo to go with it so hush! Before Forza 4 released a number of sources indicated that the team took a Tesla Roadster to record tire sounds. It turns out that the Forza team actually published a photo of the setup in one of their blogs. So, for your enjoyment:

A few things:
1. The two mics are at a 90° offset relative to each other, and the rearmost mic is tucked up behind the bumper (presumably to avoid rubber and rock spray).
2. Shotgun mics presumably in both.
3. The tire appears to be the Yokohama Advan AD07 which is stock on the Tesla (as well as the Lotus on which the Tesla is based). I’d be curious to know if they did any recording with a non-treaded tire as a slick will have a significantly different sound.
Now that summer is here I may try and recreate some of this with my own car, so you can hear the differences between the behind-the-car and beside-the-tire sounds.
