Sounds from Road America and What Else Is New

Hey all!

Just wanted to share what I’ve been up to since my last post in June.

So, first things first, my Turn 10 contract has rolled off and I’ve moved back to Minneapolis for a couple months.

I had a truly amazing experience with T10 and hopefully will be returning as soon as possible.

Since being back, I went to the ALMS + Grand Am extravaganza at Road America. While there, I was able to capture a plethora of great sounds. So for starters, here are some stereo samples of each of the main events. All three videos below are from Turn 6:

Now, while I was there I was using a DPA 5100 in conjunction with my Tascam DR-680. So, I’ve got a huge collection of surround sound examples (including the videos above). The problem is, there isn’t a great way to distribute surround files, not that I’m aware of yet anyway. So, if you’re interested, I’ve got a sample FLAC-compressed track of the Grand Am race as heard from the woods. You can download the 273mb file here. I’d actually really appreciate some feedback on this, so if you give it a listen, send me a message on here or on twitter on how it sounds.

So that brings us today, Gamescom is going strong in Germany and people are properly hearing the work I’ve done for the first time, which is an awesome, humbling, intimidating, and joyous feeling. And speaking of Gamescom, there’s a whole slew of new racing games due out this holiday season. Forza 5, Gran Turismo 6, the recent GRID 2, F1 2013 (with “Classic” edition – looking forward to that a lot!), Driveclub, NFS Rivals… maybe some more I’m missing. I’d really like to do some more interviews with these new titles, so if that’s something you’d like to see as well, leave a comment or let me know.

There was also the end of SPEED channel over the past week, which is saddening but not unexpected. If you’re reading from the US, I’d be curious on your thoughts of motorpsorts television coverage. I’d really like to do some more interviews with show producers, though finding the right people to talk to is proving difficult. Which series do you think has the best TV coverage, sound-wise? How do you feel about streaming broadcasts versus televised?

As I have a lot more free time, I hope to return to regular postings over the next couple months, so if there’s anything you’d like to see discussed, please post up!

Thank you,
-David
